Lal Deval
The Ohel David Synagogue, colloquially known as Lal Deval due to its red brick construction, is a striking example of Victorian Gothic architecture. This structure breaks away from traditional styles and has a strong resemblance to a church with its large clock tower and spire. It is only due to the Star of David motif that embellishes it that an observer can guess that this is a synagogue.
Sir David Sassoon who funded its construction was a migrant from Baghdad whose family settled in Mumbai and set up a large trading empire. He was also responsible for setting up the Sassoon General Hospital, the first of its kind in Pune. They also owned several mansions in the city, such as Ashley House opposite Wadia College. Sassoon Docks and the David Sassoon Library of Mumbai were built by his son Sir Albert Sassoon and named after him.
Times have changed and the Sassoons have moved on elsewhere. But their legacy in the form of these magnificent constructions lives on.
The Synagogue is located at Moledina Road in the Camp area. It can be reached by bus or by autorickshaw and is probably the most well-known structure in this area.
