Memory of a Warrior - Shinde Chhatri
Shinde Chhatri is widely known amongst Punekar's as a memorial to Mahadji Shinde, the commander-in-chief of the Maratha forces under the Peshwas. It is situated some distance from the city proper, at Wanowrie, near the Pune Race Course. The complex consists of a temple dedicated to Shiva, and a memorial built to Mahadji Shinde. The temple was commissioned by Mahadji Shinde himself, who used to own a lot of land in this area. The temple is heavily influenced by elements of Rajasthani architecture such as intricate carvings on the exterior and interior, elaborate floral patterns, balconies and stained glass windows. Construction was completed in 1794. Mahadji Shinde passed away shortly after the construction was completed. The late Madhavrao Scindhia commissioned the construction of a small shrine in his memory and the surrounding temple complex in 1975.
