Buland Darwaza II

Buland Darwaza II
December 29, 2007

Buland Darwaza, the formidable entrace to Akbar's Fatehpur Sikri, was built to commemorate his victory over Gujarat. At 53.63 metres high and 35 metres wide, it is the highest gateway in the world and an astounding example of Mughal architecture.

Akbar, who ascended the throne at the tender age of 13, never had the time or opportunity to learn to read or write. But the emperor more than made up for this gap in his education by his deep interest in promoting the arts. Poetry, music, painting, sculpture and of course, architecture, all thrived during his reign.
