Santa Claus is a popular icon for the Christmas season the world over, well known even amongst non-Christians. And given that colourful costume, and a likewise demanour, it's no surprise that this jolly old guy has come up to mean so much in so many different cultures. I suppose Saint Nicholas, the original inspiration behind the character, would be pleased.
