Crawford Market
Another surviving relic from the days of the Raj, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market was originally named after the city's first municipal commisioner, Arthur Crawford. Its a blend of Flemish and Norman architecture, with the frieze designed by Lockyard Kipling (father of the writer Rudyard Kipling). The structure was commissioned by Cowasji Jehangir and later donated to the city. The structure looks something out of a Victorian London cityscape amongst modern multi-storey buildings that surround the locality. It was the main wholesale market for fruits, vegetables, poultry and groceries in the city until 1996. However, the sweet smell of hay, 50 feet high skylit awning and mountains of fresh stock that continue to be sold here make shopping here a very different experience from a day at the mall.
